What are free proxies and how do they work?
Free proxies are usually publicly available proxy servers or accidentally open servers with unsecured settings left without a password by system administrators.
A proxy server is an intermediary computer that facilitates data transfer between the user and internet resources, hiding the user’s real IP address.
When using a proxy server, all requests to websites are first sent to the proxy, which then forwards them to the target resource and returns the received data to the client. Thus, the remote resource sees the proxy’s IP address instead of the user’s, increasing anonymity and security.
Free proxies are divided into three main types by anonymity level: anonymous, elite, and transparent proxies.
An anonymous proxy hides the user’s IP, but the remote server can detect proxy usage via characteristic headers. An elite proxy completely hides both the use of a proxy and the client IP, providing maximum anonymity. A transparent proxy passes the user’s IP along with its own, thus offering no anonymity.
Transparent proxies send the user’s real IP address in headers to the remote resource, making them unsuitable for tasks requiring a high degree of privacy.
